Frequently Asked Questions
Planning a private chef experience should feel easy. Here are answers to common questions about menus, pricing, locations, service styles, and what to expect when booking SD Event Chef.
Booking & Planning
How do I book SD Event Chef?
Start by sending us a few details about your event — the date, location, guest count, event style, and the kind of food experience you have in mind. From there, we’ll help shape the menu, service style, and quote. Once the details are confirmed, we’ll reserve your date and get everything moving.
How far in advance should I book?
The earlier the better, especially for weekends, holidays, summer dates, vacation rental stays, and larger parties. For small private dinners, we may be able to accommodate shorter notice depending on availability. If your date is coming up soon, reach out anyway and we’ll let you know what is possible.
Do you provide custom quotes?
Yes. Every event is a little different, so we provide a custom quote based on guest count, menu style, location, service needs, staffing, rentals, ingredients, and event details. The pricing page gives starting points, but the final quote is built around your specific event.
Is there a minimum?
Yes. Minimums vary by event type because every booking includes planning, shopping, prep, travel, cooking, service, and cleanup. Smaller groups may have a higher per-person cost because the same professional setup and chef time are still required.
Menus & Food
Are menus customized?
Yes. Menus are customized around your event, guest count, preferences, dietary needs, location, and overall vibe. Some guests want a polished plated dinner, others want a casual family-style meal, grazing table, taco bar, seafood-inspired coastal menu, brunch, or party bites. We help build the right menu for the moment.
Do you have sample menus?
Yes. The Menus page includes sample menu inspiration, but those are starting points — not fixed packages. SD Event Chef menus are designed to be flexible, seasonal, and event-specific.
Can you handle dietary restrictions?
Yes. Please tell us about allergies, dietary restrictions, and food preferences during planning. We can discuss vegetarian, gluten-free, dairy-free, seafood preferences, spice levels, and other menu needs. Severe allergies should always be discussed clearly before booking so we can determine what is safe and realistic for your event.
Do you shop for the ingredients?
Yes. Ingredient shopping is included in most private chef experiences. Depending on the event, groceries and ingredients may be included in the custom quote or billed separately. We’ll make that clear before booking.
Do you use local or seasonal ingredients?
Whenever possible, yes. Chef William’s style is inspired by fresh coastal flavor, quality ingredients, and San Diego’s relaxed food culture. Menus can be built around seasonal produce, seafood, grilled favorites, bright salads, shareable plates, and event-friendly dishes.
Service Style
What service styles do you offer?
We can help with plated dinners, family-style meals, buffet-style service, grazing tables, small bites, brunches, and casual party menus. The best service style depends on your space, guest count, kitchen setup, timeline, and the mood of the event.
Do you cook at our home or rental?
Yes. SD Event Chef can cook at private homes, vacation rentals, beach houses, Airbnbs, offices, and private event spaces, depending on the setup. We’ll ask about the kitchen, equipment, parking, access, and any property rules during planning.
Do you clean up after cooking?
Basic kitchen cleanup is included with most services. That usually means cleaning the chef’s prep/cooking area and leaving the kitchen reasonably tidy. Larger events, rentals, heavy dishwashing, trash removal, or full event cleanup may require additional staff or planning.
Do you provide servers or bartenders?
Service staff, bartenders, and additional event support may be available or coordinated depending on the event. Some events only need chef service, while others benefit from extra hands for setup, passing appetizers, clearing plates, pouring drinks, or managing a buffet. We’ll recommend what makes sense.
Do you provide plates, tables, chairs, or rentals?
Rentals are not automatically included. Depending on the event, rentals such as plates, flatware, glassware, tables, linens, or serving pieces may need to be provided by the host or coordinated separately. We can discuss what your event needs during the quote process.

Can you cook at an Airbnb?
Yes, as long as the property allows it and the kitchen setup works for the menu. Please check any Airbnb or vacation rental rules before booking. We’ll also ask about the kitchen, equipment, parking, and access so we can plan properly.
Pricing & Payment
How much does a private chef in San Diego cost?
Private chef pricing depends on guest count, menu, ingredients, location, service style, and staffing. SD Event Chef provides starting prices on the Pricing page so guests have a clear idea of what to expect, then creates a custom quote for each event.
Are groceries included in the price?
Sometimes. Depending on the event, groceries may be included in the custom quote or billed separately. Premium proteins, seafood, specialty ingredients, and custom menu requests can affect the final price. We’ll make the pricing structure clear before booking.
What can increase the final quote?
Final pricing can change based on guest count, menu complexity, premium ingredients, service staff, bartenders, rentals, travel, kitchen limitations, multi-day events, and cleanup needs. The goal is always to give you a clear quote before the event is confirmed.
Do you require a deposit?
A deposit may be required to reserve your date, especially for weekends, larger events, or custom menus. The deposit amount and payment schedule will be explained before booking.
Event Day
What do you need from the host?
We’ll need clear access to the kitchen or service area, parking or loading information, any property rules, the final guest count, dietary notes, and a general timeline. For vacation rentals or event spaces, photos of the kitchen can be helpful.
How much kitchen space do you need?
It depends on the menu and guest count. Some events can be handled in a standard home kitchen, while larger or more complex menus may need more prep space, refrigeration, oven/stovetop access, or additional equipment. We’ll talk through the setup during planning.
Can the event be outdoors?
Yes, outdoor events can be a great fit, especially in San Diego. Outdoor service depends on access to prep space, shade, power, water, food safety, weather, and event logistics. Beach or park events may require extra planning or permits depending on the location.
What happens if the guest count changes?
Please let us know as soon as possible. Guest count affects shopping, prep, staffing, timing, and pricing. Final guest count deadlines will be discussed before booking so the event can run smoothly.
Can you help us choose the right package?
Yes. If you’re not sure whether you need a plated dinner, family-style meal, buffet, grazing table, or beach-party menu, we can help. Tell us about the event and we’ll recommend the service style that fits your space, group, and budget.
